September 2006 - The Real Race to New York

The Real Race to New York

Bonfire night may seem a long way off but not if you’re training for the New York City Marathon.

Consort Homes Customer Care Manager, Phil Lee has teamed up with Real Radio’s Sarah Wakefield to run the 26-mile race in the Big Apple on 5th November and is hoping to raise £10,750 for Real Radio’s Real Appeal.

Originally, Phil and Sarah were joined by Consort’s Stewart Loben, but the trio were reduced to a duo after Stewart suffered a serious knee injury.

Phil said, “There was no way Stewart could take part in the marathon, which left us needing a replacement with just a few weeks to prepare. What we needed was someone who was either super fit or very daft.” The replacement was Sarah’s Real Radio colleague, Michelle Knight, although Phil is keeping tight lipped as to which of the two attributes she displayed!

Consort Homes agreed to fund the cost of sending the threesome to New York to help contribute to the appeal in aid of Sheffield Children’s Hospital, which the three runners recently visited.

“Having seen the children and heard of some of their sad stories first hand are doubling our efforts to raise as much money as possible.”

So far, the tremendous trio have raised £4,760 but the team are determined to make it to £10,750 – the height of the Statue of Liberty in pound coins.

Regular updates are being broadcast on Real Radio 106-108fm and there’s a very amusing training diary available on Consort’s Website (www.consorthomes.co.uk)

To add your pound to the team’s pile, text the word “RACE” to 81068. Your text will cost no more than £1.50 and all profits will go directly to the Real Appeal. If you have any training tips please send them to trainingtips@consorthomes.co.uk.
