April 2007 - Vandalised Local Community Allotment Receives Support

Local business donates £200 to the Woodcraft Folk Allotment project after fire.

After vandalism destroyed a community allotment for local children in Thornton last summer, local housebuilder, Consort Homes, has stepped in with financial support to repair the damage.

The allotment is run by the local Woodcraft Folk group, an organisation for primary school children, which seeks to develop self confidence and activity in society through a variety of community projects, including this allotment growing fruit and vegetables.

The allotment was broken into and devastated before the vandals set alight the fence and shed, causing extensive damage to the property and crops growing.

Tony Tennant, leader of the local Woodcraft Folk group, said: “We are so grateful to Consort for its generous donation. We are going to buy a new fence and shed with the money and it means that we can get back on track with the plans for this year.

“There are about 30 children in the group from the local area, and the allotment project is a favourite amongst them, as they love teamwork and the results are so ‘fruitful’, excuse the pun.”

Darren Stubbs, Chairman of Consort Homes, said: “We want to build more than just houses, we are aiming to invest in the local community too, and here we could make a bit of a difference.

“The allotment is only about 50 yards from our Headley View development in Thornton, so it really is an integral part of the community that we are involved in.

“When we saw that this local project had suffered all this damage we wanted to help. It is projects like this allotment that make a really positive difference in communities.”
