14th November 2007 - Apprentice Carpenter Is Best in Yorkshire
Jason Gray, an apprentice carpenter for Leeds-based leading homebuilder Consort Homes, has been awarded first place in the Yorkshire Skillbuild competition, which recognises excellence in construction for young people.
A student at Leeds College of Building, Jason has worked for Consort Homes for three years across their various developments in Yorkshire. His carpentry skills are currently being put to good use at Consort’s development, The Courtyard in Meanwood, where he is putting the finishing touches to doors, skirting and architraves.
Following his success in the region, 19-year-old Jason from Holton, East Leeds, took his carpentry skills to the National Skillbuild Finals in Birmingham where he competed against all regional finalists from around the UK, and came an admirable fourth.
Jason said: “This has been a big year for me. Winning the Yorkshire Skillbuild award was a real honour and it was a privilege to be part of the national finals in Birmingham a few weeks ago – representing Consort and Yorkshire.
“I really enjoy carpentry and it’s great to be recognised for the skills I have built up over the past few years.”
Richard Cook, Managing Director of Consort Homes Northern, said: “Jason is a skilled carpenter and he has really demonstrated his talent this year with consistently high quality work here and his success with Skillbuild.
“Skilled trades-people are the cornerstone of our business – our reputation is literally in their hands – and it is fantastic to see their hard-work and talent rewarded in this way.
“It is great to have Jason on board and we are looking forward to nurturing his talent across a long career at Consort.”
Founded in 1981, Skillbuild is a national competition promoting excellence amongst young craftspeople in the UK.
